Young Persons Car Insurance

I've been writing a lot recently about auto insurance as its a topic that is close to my heart seeing as I have a great love of both cars and motorcycles and at the same time a healthy loathing for having to shell out for my annual premium. Now that I am starting to reach more advanced years I find that I'm having to spend less as time goes by due to my reduced risk of accident and increasing no claims bonus. At the same time I remember all to well the horrors of young persons car insurance and how it can take the gloss of what should be one of life's pleasures.

Learning to drive a car gives a person a freedom that up until this point in life is unknown so its hard to underestimate the importance of getting a license for most people. Unfortunately when we're young we also find ourselves in a situation where you generally are a little short on that most important of things known as cash and at the same time things such as auto insurance are at their most expensive.

So you've got no cash, you've just passed your driving test and you need to sort yourself out with a new car and all the expenses that go along with it. What to do? If you are fortunate enough to have a little cash put by then you will want to buy a vehicle as soon as possible and get out on the open road. Many people immediately rush out and buy the best car they can afford without considering the extra costs which are all part and parcel of driving on public highways. If you are a young driver who has just passed their test then car insurance is going to be your biggest expense by far. You might even find that in extreme cases your insurance premium costs more than your automobile itself, a truly ridiculous situation I'm sure you will agree.

Although the prices of insurance premiums for novice drivers may seem unbelievable they are expensive for a good reason and its not because the companies are in it together to rip you all off as much as possible. The younger and more inexperienced you are the more likely you are to make an auto accident claim on you insurance due to your increased risk of having an accident. To make up for this fact the insurer will make young persons car insurance that much more expensive to help pay for the claims you are more likely to have.

This will no doubt seem unfair and I know how you feel having been there myself, although it was more years ago than I care to remember. Fortunately there are a few things you can do to reduce the cost of insurance and make your formative years of driving a little more affordable.

Drive a smaller car - Smaller cars tend to have smaller engines which makes them less attractive to thieves and makes them slower so your less likely to have a crash. Novice drivers don't have the experience to know when they are traveling to fast so buying a under powered vehicle means you can't get out of control so easily which in turn means you have less accidents. Although we all want the coolest car possible when we are showing off on the road, taking the sensible route will mean lower costs, less risk of killing yourself and improved driving skills over the long term.

Get in your parents insurance - If your parents drive a car that they are willing to allow you to drive then you can get yourself put on their policy. This will help especially if they have built up a no claims bonus and will mean reduced premiums. This solution will mean that you don't have your own vehicle but that might be a price worth paying for the savings achieved. After you have a years driving experience under your belt you will find premiums will be slightly lower and hopefully you'll have saved up some extra money in the meantime.

Get third party insurance - If your car isn't worth a huge amount of money it will be worth getting third party cover rather than fully comprehensive. This means you won't be covered for damage you might do to your own vehicle in the event of an accident but will cover damage to other people's cars and their person.

Fit a security device - This is something that won't make a big difference to your young persons car insurance although its something that many people advise. Because alarms and immobilizers are expensive sometimes the savings made aren't worth the effort. Check with your insurance company before making a purchase to decide if the expense is worth it.

The bottom line is that car insurance for young drivers is expensive and your just going to have to put up with it for a few years, even if you do all in your power to reduce the cost as much as possible. Suck it up and enjoy your driving, doing all that is possible to avoid making a claim for the first few years and you'll soon be rewarded with cheaper premiums.
