Cheap Car Insurance For Young Drivers

Being a young driver is an exciting time in our lives, there's nothing like passing your driving test and getting your first car. Its probably the first time that many of us feel that true sense of freedom. Being able to go anywhere you want at any time. The world is your oyster!

But being a young drivers also has its downsides, things that will not be a problem in a few years but at the moment seem to exist just to make our life harder.

First of all, if we are not lucky enough to have parents with very deep pockets, we need to scrape together enough money to buy our first car. It'll probably be a bit of a wreck but we'll love it anyway and treat it like a new member of the family.


When we get the keys to our pride and joy we can't wait to get out on the open road, but then we remember we have to get insurance first. Buying insurance for anyone is a pain in the neck, it feels like such a waste of money. We give the insurance company money to cover us in the event that something we hope will never happen happens. And if it doesn't happen we get nothing in return except a big bill to pay all over again next year.

Getting car insurance for young driver thought is even more upsetting than usual. Its a time in our lives when we have very little money yet the insurance companies want us to give them even more money than everyone else. It seems so unfair.

Although it doesn't make it any easier to take we have to remember that there is a reason why insurance rates for young drivers are higher than for those who are more experienced on the roads. Quite simply, young drivers have more accidents and a therefore a statistically bigger risk top insurance companies to cover. If you are a young driver you have to foot the bill for other young drivers who make the claims. Seems unfair but that's the way the system works.


Insurance for young drivers is never going to be exactly cheap but thankfully there are a few things you can do to make sure you get a premium that is as small as possible.

OK, well you can't ever get cheap comprehensive car insurance if you are a young driver but you can get it cheaper than you would think if you take a few steps.

1. Drive a factory standard car - Most car lovers like to make improvements to their cars appearance of performance but this can be problematic when it come to phoning your insurance company. Modified car insurance for young drivers is notriously expensive so it makes sense to keep all the cars you driver entirely standard for the first few years of your driving career.

Modifed car insurance is actually expensive for all drivers its just that young drivers start off at a disadvantage of having expesive premiums before they even make any modifications.

Please don't be tempted to make modifications to your vehicle then refrain from telling your insurance insuracne company about the changes you have made. Failing to inform them of modifications will probably mean they won't be paying out on your policy if you have to make a claim.

2. Make your car as theft proof as possible - Getting an insurance approved alarm and immobilizer system will keep your premiums down by making your car less likely to be stolen. In the same vain you can offer to keep your car garaged overnight or at the very least take your car off the road at night.

3.Drive a car with a small engine for the first few years of your driving life. The higher the power output of your vehicle the higher the insurance premium for any driver and for young drivers in particular. This is especially true for young male drivers so do yourself a favor and get a small car for at least a couple of years. This also has the advantage of meaning you will be less likely to kill yourself and you will come out of the experience driving a small car as a better driver.

Many young drivers will be disappointed with the thought of going through the trials of getting their driving license only to be faced with the prospect of driving a small, unmodified car for a few years. Look on the positive side though and appreciate the awesome new freedoms you have as a driver rather than the thought that you would rather be driving something more exciting. The time will come in the future when you have the ability to treat yourself to a performance car and by the time it comes you will be a better driver so you'll enjoy it more and it won't cost the earth to insure.
